Career Catalyst Assessment

The Career Catalyst Assessment is a professional development and interest-confirmation tool created specifically for workforce development professionals to assess, design, and manage their own career pathways.

Mirroring the structural design and style of the O*NET Interest Profiler, this assessment does not function as a standard performance evaluation. Instead, it serves as a reflective mechanism. It assesses an individual’s professional interests, core strengths, and alignment with the unique demands of the workforce development industry—helping practitioners identify skill gaps, leverage transferable strengths, and map out paths toward advanced credentials like the Certified Workforce Development Professional® (CWDP) or the Certified Workforce Development Leader (CWDL).

Part 1: The Creation Framework

The creation of the Career Catalyst Assessment is built upon three foundational pillars designed to ensure the tool is grounded in the reality

1. Non-Linear Entry Mapping

Most workforce professionals do not go to college intending to work in workforce development; they “fall into it” from human resources, social work, education, or business. The tool was developed to capture these diverse backgrounds, translating non-traditional experience into a structured, intentional pathway within the industry.

2. O*NET Interest Profiler Adaptation

By mimicking the psychometric style of the O*NET Profiler, the tool categorizes day-to-day workforce tasks into measurable behavioral preferences. It helps individuals validate their interests in what they enjoy doing with objective, industry-specific career tracks.

3. Competency & Skills-Based Alignment

The framework explicitly aligns a practitioner’s personal interests with the core competencies demanded by workforce development programs nationwide (e.g., labor market intelligence, case management, and program design), ensuring personal career growth directly translates into improved system-level service delivery.

Part 2: The 5 Major Sectors of the Workforce Profession

To provide clear career directions, the assessment breaks the workforce development ecosystem down into 5 major sectors. While these may not represent all of the occupations related to workforce, they can be used to identify competencies needed for workforce development programs. Practitioners are profiled against these sectors to determine where their interests and competencies best align.

Sector 1: Career Planning & Guidance

  • Focus: Frontline engagement with job seekers, dislocated workers, and vulnerable populations.
  • Core Tasks: Intake assessments, identifying barriers to employment, career coaching, and formulating Individual Employment Plans (IEPs).
  • Profiler Persona: Highly aligned with individuals showing strong social interests who thrive on human connection and individual client advocacy.

Sector 2: Business & Community Engagement

  • Focus: Serving the “dual customer” of the workforce system—local businesses and industry sectors.
  • Core Tasks: Sector strategy development, customized training coordination, job development, and counseling employers on skills-based hiring practices.
  • Profiler Persona: Aligns with Enterprising interests, requiring strong communication, negotiation, and macro-economic awareness.

Sector 3: Training & Development

  • Focus: The structural architecture of workforce programs.
  • Core Tasks: Managing WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) regulations, tracking performance metrics, policy implementation, and managing funding stream transitions.
  • Profiler Persona: Strongly mirrors Conventional interests, favoring professionals who excel in organization, systematic processes, data integrity, and regulatory frameworks.

Sector 4: Data & Market Analysis

  • Focus: Translating raw economic data into actionable strategic insights for the community.
  • Core Tasks: Analyzing regional hiring trends, mapping skill gaps using data tools (such as Lightcast), and advising boards on high-growth, in-demand industries.
  • Profiler Persona: Appeals to Investigative types who enjoy problem-solving through research, numbers, and objective market forecasting.

Sector 5: Leadership & Strategy

  • Focus: Executive governance and community alignment.
  • Core Tasks: Cultivating cross-system partnerships (uniting K-12 education, community colleges, economic development agencies, and community organizations) and driving regional workforce initiatives.
  • Profiler Persona: Best fits individuals ready for advanced leadership tracks, combining an overarching system-wide vision with collaborative execution.

Part 3: The Professional Development Cycle

  • The Professional Development Cycle: Once the Career Catalyst Assessment clarifies which of these 5 sectors an individual aligns with, the results feed directly into NAWDP’s broader professional development worksheet. This allows the practitioner to isolate their specific transferable strengths, address their skill gaps, and strategically plan their progression toward a formal credential.
