At 17 years old, Maurice faced significant challenges in the traditional school system. Seeking a better environment, he transferred to a rural high school, hoping for a fresh start. However, adjusting to this new setting also proved challenging, leaving Maurice uncertain about his educational path.
Recognizing his struggles, his pre-trial case manager encouraged him to explore alternative routes to academic success, specifically earning a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
Maurice was soon connected with a youth programs case manager, who conducted a thorough assessment of both his essential skills and aptitude. The results revealed that Maurice was far above the required academic level to obtain a GED, making formal preparation unnecessary. Instead of enrolling him in remedial coursework, his case manager immediately scheduled his official GED test. Within one week of enrollment, Maurice successfully earned his GED—an incredible milestone that placed him a full year ahead of his original graduating class.
With this major achievement behind him, Maurice was eager to transition into the workforce. Given his preference for hands-on work and a love for the outdoors, his case manager thoughtfully matched him with an employer in the public works department of a small town near his home. This opportunity provided Maurice with practical experience, professional development, and a career pathway that aligned with his strengths.
