Arizona Candidate Vickie Simmons

Deputy Director, ARIZONA@WORK-Southeastern Arizona

Bio:

For more than 16 years, I have served as the Deputy Director of ARIZONA@WORK–Southeastern Arizona, where I oversee the day-to-day operations of our local workforce area. In addition to my leadership responsibilities, I remain directly involved in client case management, allowing me to work closely with individuals as they pursue training opportunities.

Currently, I serve as a member of the NAWDP Board of Directors. I greatly value the opportunity to represent the State of Arizona.

What is your vision for the workforce development profession?

My vision for the workforce development profession is for workforce professionals to have access to relevant, high-quality education that equips them to perform their roles at the highest level. I believe that the more professional development opportunities workforce development professionals receive, the more effective, confident, and impactful they become in serving their communities.

Do you have a particular interest area or passion in workforce development?

As noted in my biographical description, I truly enjoy working with clients and watching them grow, succeed in their training, and discover their passion in the workplace. At ARIZONA@WORK–Southeastern Arizona, we tell our clients, “Your success is our success,” and I genuinely live by that belief. When people ask me how I like my job, my answer is simple: I love what I do. Workforce development is an industry where we have the opportunity to literally change lives for the better.

Why do you want to serve on the Board?

I currently serve on the Board of Directors representing the great state of Arizona and respectfully seek the opportunity to continue my service.  During my time on the Board, I have gained valuable insight into the inner workings of NAWDP and have come to appreciate the organization’s strong commitment to serving its membership. NAWDP is a highly professional organization, and both the Board and staff are dedicated to providing exceptional professional education and support to its members.

What do you think is the biggest challege facing the profession today and how can NAWDP address that challenge?

I believe the greatest challenge facing the workforce development profession today is the decline in funding resulting from the lack of WIOA reauthorization. Workforce development areas cannot continue to serve the same—or an increasing—number of participants without additional funding. NAWDP can help address this challenge by continuing to lead the workforce development field at national level. By strengthening partnerships with others, NAWDP can effectively advocate for us.
